The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structure Construction (SC), is recruiting to fill a Senior Bridge Engineer (Specialist) position in Orange County.

This position reports directly to a Supervising Bridge Engineer in the Division of Engineering Services (DES) / Structure Construction (SC). The incumbent is responsible for providing expertise and management in meeting Project Delivery commitments, training program goals, and task management of workload and resources. Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Quality Management Representative within the Office.

May be required to assist on project oversight services on local program projects.

Working Conditions

Position located at 15700 Tustin Village Way, Tustin, Orange  County.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process. 

The SOQ must be typed, single spaced, 12-point font, and no more than two (2) pages in length. Applicants who do not follow these requirements may be disqualified from the recruitment. Cover letters and resumes do not take the place of the SOQ. The SOQ must be submitted along with the State Application.  The purpose of the SOQ is to describe, in narrative form, your qualifications.   1. Describe your knowledge and experience in bridge construction methods and engineering, bridge rehabilitation and maintenance techniques, structural analysis, project development process, procedures, and philosophies.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of using tools such as Vision, Weat, and Excel and any technical abilities such as programming skills.
  3. Demonstrate your ability to analyze facts, data, and situations, using problem solving techniques.
  4. Demonstrate your ability to negotiate and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (e.g., writing technical reports, group
