Job Description

Job Description and Duties

Do you want to work on the high-paced, dynamic State Fund Legal Lien team? Are you looking for a position where you can have a direct impact on State Fund by defending and adjusting liens? Would you enjoy traveling among the verdant hills of the Bay area and making court appearances in some of the dynamic cities in that area, such as San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Santa Rosa? If so, you’re invited to join our Legal team!

State Compensation Insurance Fund’s (“State Fund’s”) Legal Lien team is seeking a motivated Lien Representative or Senior Lien Representative. At State Fund, our Legal Lien Representatives provide representation, consultation, analysis, defense, and testimony on lien cases at the Division of Workers’ Compensation (“DWC”) lien hearings in accordance with regional office/corporate policies.

As a Lien Representative, you will have the opportunity to make a real impact by handling, defending, litigating, and resolving workers’ compensation liens.

State Fund’s Legal Lien team has some of the most experienced workers’ compensation legal lien representatives with decades of lien litigation experience. We defend cases aggressively, using a collaborative, thoughtful, and targeted approach that is always designed to serve our clients’ best interests. Whether you want to use your experience to teach and train, or embrace opportunities to learn and grow, the Legal Lien team is a great opportunity for you.

It is anticipated this position will serve primarily in Northern California, specifically in the San Jose, Santa Rosa, Oakland, and San Francisco locations. However, the successful candidates might be assigned to appear at other Boards and locations as well.

However, to facilitate local in-person hearings, the successful candidates will be expected to attend some hearings and other calendar commitments in-person.

Your Role:

As a vital member of our team, you'll enjoy a diverse and fulfilling role. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate closely with internal and external clients.
  • Prepare assigned lien cases for court hearings, according to workers’ compensation laws, DWC regulations, medical fee schedules, and State Fund policies and procedures.
  • Research and analyze statutory and case law relating to specific issues
  • Represent State Fund at lien hearings, including trials.
  • Review bills based on applicable fee schedules.
  • Determine compensability of unresolved, outstanding liens filed against claims within the structure of the law and using applicable fee schedule so that the fiscal integrity of State Fund is protected.
